You're just about to get started on your podcast, but what are you going to talk about and where should you focus time to get started? Welcome to Geelong podcasters, your weekly podcast for tips and tricks to grow your audience. We are a group of passionate podcasters located in Geelong and the Bellarine in Victoria, Australia. If you're down our way at the end of the month, why not come to one of our free monthly meetup events and also find the booking links and more in the show notes. This podcast episode is part of a longer series where we discuss basic questions of people that have about podcasting. So this one, I think, is like the third one or along in the series, and initially a couple of episodes back, we discussed the basics on what you need to get started for a podcast. And a lot of people believe, or they think mainly about the microphone, the headphones, the editing software. That's what most people focus on when it comes to a podcast. But most of the work is done with your brain and done with research. So with access to the internet, if that helps, and access to a community that you are a part of does wonders for what you're actually going to do your podcast about. So the things I want to discuss with you today are three things. To choose a topic for your podcast, you need to focus on the passion and expertise that you hold in bringing into the podcast, or who you can seek out for those expertise, the audience interest for your podcast, and the tip and the this Lance that you are going to put on your podcast. And then third is sustainable content, what you can objectively and reliably go back to again and again, to have different takes on that is going to be a consistent thing that you can build a podcast on, compared to something that will have a very short shelf life. So going on to the first thing, what I discuss about passion and expertise, selecting a podcast topic that you are passionate about, and that you are knowledgeable in, is a great help. And if you do not have the expertise in the industry, like, for example, you're maybe you're a novice, or maybe you're not exactly an expert in the particular industry that you're in, that is okay, too. Do you have the passion of that industry? The reason I bring that up is because a lot of people start a podcast because they believe they are an expert and they want to be seen as an authority in that space, and then when they actually sit down for the microphone, they feel like they don't have a lot to say. So I'm going to tell you now that that is something that needs to be worked on and honed over time, but in that meantime, you can interview people who are expert in their in those industries. You can easily do call, call outs for interviews, or people to be able to give you their expertise in your podcast topic. But you still have to motivate that with the passion that you have inside for your particular topic niche. Another thing that I want you to focus on is the audience interest. As I've mentioned in previous podcasts in this series, you are doing a podcast not for you, but for your audience. And is your audience there to begin with? And is the topic that you are going to discuss your podcast on, or you're going to focus your podcast on, going to resonate with that audience. Now it's okay if you don't have the answer straight away. That is what research and taking time and talking to people who are in your desired audience gives you a better idea of what you can do, and keeping in mind that with a podcast, you can grow and adapt and change depending on what feedback you get from people who are in your audience, but to start off with, it helps to have a basic idea of who your target audience is and who exactly you want to bring on board and with and how you want to grow your audience. It is helpful to know who they are. It is useful, I find, to have someone who is in your audience or in your target market, who you know in real life, someone that you can actually talk to in real life. It's okay if you don't, but the way that we portray ourselves on media is very different to how we actually feel about something. So keep that in mind. And the third thing I want to touch on is sustainable content. I think the term revolves around having a knowledge base that is a inch long but a mile deep, compared to something that is an inch deep but a mile long. What I mean by that is that you may have a podcast topic that is very rich of an idea, but you're niching yourself too far, or you're making your topic too compressed to not be able to expand outside of that, to be able to draw in your audience, to help them what they need, what they need, help on and to ultimately give yourself enough wiggle room to be able to follow your passions and have something interesting for you, and that is okay you.
