Just numbers, mate, let's talk podcast analytics. Welcome to Geelong podcasters. Your weekly podcast for tips and tricks to grow your audience. We are a group of passionate podcasters located in Geelong and the bellerine in Victoria, Australia. If you're down our way at the end of the month, why not come to one of our free monthly meet up events and also find the booking links and more in the show notes. This is the first episode in a three part series about podcast analytics. We're going to walk through the basics of what podcast analytics are, touch on some key metrics that you need to know and why these numbers even matter for you and your podcasting journey. Don't worry. We'll take all the sweat and no worries. And I stumbled that bit up. But essentially, we're going to make it fun and simple for you. So let's start off with what part of podcast analytics actually are. They are a fancy term to mean all of the data that's around your podcast is performance. So basically, who is listening, when they're listening, where they're listening, and maybe for a little bit of reading into the data why they're listening, some key metrics that are useful for you to know, as the Podcast Producer, host, or anyone who works on a team on a podcast, the key metrics to know are downloads and plays. These are very distinct different numbers, but essentially it's the amount of people grabbing an episode for the road. How many people are downloading to eventually listen to the podcast? There are listeners. So these are unique people tuning in or downloading your podcast, and not just anyone who accidentally clicks by or who is seen as you know, floating past the podcast, people who are actually, genuinely interested in what you do. And then, of course, you've got episodes played. So how many times each episode of your podcast is actually played? And this can show you crowd favorites or topics of interest that your audience, again, your audience is reflecting these back at you that you might be able to utilize in your future planning of episodes. Why these numbers matter are essentially these. This data and metrics allow you, once you actually look into it and read into it, allow you to find what people your audience, and also potential new people to your audience are finding and enjoying and what they're actually sticking around for regarding your content. This is great to know to help if you are developing ideas or maybe wanting to pursue different areas of your niche or your topic. Again, in previous episodes, we've talked about that box of influence that you want to be a leader in regarding your podcast. What are people actually interested regarding your podcast, topic and niche? It's always great to know these i these topics and these ideas to both go forward, but also be to be able to push the limits of what people want to hear about and want to learn about. And if you've got this data in mind, you're able to look at it on the back end of your podcasting host. So this can be your Spotify podcast, your buzz sprouts, your lips in your essentially wherever you are, hosting a podcast providing analytics, and in some cases very detailed analytics and reports on these are essentially what you pay for in regards to hosting your podcast on their platform. One tip that I want to give you is keep a record so open a spreadsheet, making sure that you actually note these numbers and this data as it changes over time, so you can reveal trends and help your podcast grow as you continue on with your podcast. Because these numbers aren't something to be scared of. These numbers are there to help boost your performance, because if we didn't know what was happening, we would not know what the next step to do or what the right thing to do is, at the moment, with the Geelong podcasters, I am very much relying on the Facebook and LinkedIn groups and the face to face interactions I have with the members of the Geelong podcasters to dictate what topics we cover, and as we grow and as the podcast evolves, I'm able to then use my data and my analytics to get a better idea of what subjects and what topics really got people engaged. So I can start doing say more in depth series, or more in depth podcast episodes, or maybe even some interviews with my members, if that's what people want to hear. Now, of course, as the host or producers of your podcast don't always give people what they want, and I know this may seem without contradictory, what I mean by that is seeing what these numbers can give you and taking an educated guess on what they would find interesting that is related or is somewhat tangentially associated with what you've done in the past, so that you can still give them new and interesting and invigorating ideas without just rehashing the same things over and over again because they're popular. Take this time to look at your analytics. Yes, and over the next two episode, we're going to touch into some more depth and maybe some performance standards to give you an idea of what is good and what is bad regarding podcast analytics.
